Description

Join instructor Steve Tamari, Professor of Middle East and Islamic History at SIUE, to learn about the basic features of written Arabic. Like many languages, Arabic has its own set of unique text features that distinguish it from other writing systems. Examples of some basic rules are Right-to-Left Script: Arabic is written from right to left, which is the opposite direction of many other languages, such as English. This means that the first letter of a word appears on the right, and subsequent letters follow to the left. And there are no capital letters. We’ll learn history, script, pronunciation, and alphabet. We’ll end with a workshop where everyone learns how to write their name in Arabic.
