Description

A private tour (just for Oasis!) with a docent-led walk through the following three exhibits presented by CAM this fall and winter. Montreal-based artist Hajra Waheed’s first major museum solo exhibition in the US. Waheed’s multidisciplinary practice explores the legacies of colonial and state violence with a uniquely poetic approach and engagement with the world. Weaving between the intimate and infinite constellations of the communities of which she is a part, her works—while rooted in the historical—imagine new possibilities towards a radically collective and borderless future.

CAM presents new works by Dominic Chambers at his first museum exhibition in his hometown of St. Louis. Chambers creates vibrant paintings that engage art historical models, such as color field painting, gestural abstraction, and surrealism. Interested in how art can function as a vehicle for reconsidering one’s relationship with the world, the artist sees painting as a critical and intellectual endeavor as much as an aesthetic one. For Chambers, a lover of books, literary forms such as magical realism rest firmly at the center of his examination of contemporary concerns around race, personal and imagined narratives, and the complexity of one’s interior life.

Las Vegas-based artist Justin Favela will present a new site-specific installation and solo exhibition on the Museum’s Project Wall. Favela creates vibrant large-scale murals and sculptures inspired by art history, community, celebration, pop culture, and his Mexican-Guatemalan upbringing in the US. As a multidisciplinary artist, Favela is interested in exploring the notions of authenticity, place, and identity using familiar materials to create his pieces.
