Description

The standard for great wealth was John D. Rockefeller. During his time, and by some translations of monetary value into today’s dollars, Rockefeller became the richest American ever. Farsighted, brilliant, and efficient, Rockefeller dominated the American oil industry by controlling production, refining, transporting, marketing and the subsidiary organizations that made all this possible. He birthed the powerful, and unregulated business combination, the trust. Both religious and acquisitive, Rockefeller was reviled by muckraking journalists, such as Ida Tarbell. He came to be regarded as a cold-hearted robber baron. But his legacy is more complex than that. At a time when capitalism is being reviled, this class examines the life of a major progenitor.
