Description
The ancient city-state of Sparta created a unique, indeed radical, system of social, economic, political, and above all military organization. Ironically, this radical experiment resulted in Sparta becoming the most conservative, indeed reactionary, state in ancient Greece. It also provided contemporary observers and later historians with much to praise and pillory, laud and lament, and discuss and debate.
