Nearly 200,000 African American men fought for the Union military during the American Civil War. This program will center on their experiences during the war. Park Guide Ashton Farrell will discuss the evolutionary political process that brought them into service and analyze some of the important battles in which they fought. He will also discuss the prejudices they faced among their white peers and how attitudes began to change because of USCTs proving themselves in battle. Finally, Ashton will look at Ulysses S. Grant’s thoughts on Black soldiers serving under him in the U.S. Army.
